Editorial Review On January 12, 1982 in New York, NY; the USPS honored Ralph Johnson Bunche, an American political scientist and diplomat, who was the first African American to receive the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Palestine. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he received the Medal of Freedom from President John F. Kennedy. Bunche was born on August 7, 1903 and died on December 9, 1971 at the age of 68.
