The overall concept remains the same: it’s a versatile touring ski with trustworthy performance, but Black Crows has softened the flex just a bit, which gives it a bigger sweet spot, more intuitiveness, and overall just a more fun feel. There is, however, still plenty of torsional stiffness and edge grip, so don’t that they took too much out of it. In the backcountry, you need a reliable ski, and the Camox Freebird is just that. The mix of paulownia wood and carbon fiber in the ski’s construction, plus a titanal layer underfoot, keeps the weight impressively low while providing the necessary stability and damping for advanced and expert backcountry skiers. Camber underfoot gives it a lot of spring, snap, and energy, while the progressive tip rocker can handle a wide range of snow conditions and terrain with a smooth, relatively floaty feel. A touch of tail rocker gives you easier edge release when you’re wiggling through tight trees, chutes, or couloirs.
