This version of the QRE1113 branch board has a digital output that uses a capacitor discharge circuit to measure the amount of reflection. This compact board is ideal for line sensing when only digital l/O is available and can be used in 3.3V and 5V systems. The QRE1113 infrared reflectivity sensor consists of two parts - an LED that emits infrared and a phototransistor that is sensitive to infrared. When you power the VCC and GND pins, the IR LED inside the sensor lights up. A 100Q resistor is onboard and placed in series with the LED to limit current. The output of the phototransistor is connected to a 10nF capacitor. The faster the capacitor is discharged, the more reflective the surface is. These sensors are widely used in production-tracking robots. A white surface reflects more light than a black surface, so when pointed at a white surface, the capacitor discharges faster than when pointed at a black surface. Both the power input and output pins lead into a 3-pin, 0.1-inch pitch connector socket. If you want to screw it onto the board, the board also has a mounting hole.
