The Clipper was considered the finest commercial planes in the air and established aircraft as transoceanic carriers in the 1940s. December 7, 1941 brought the Golden Era to an end. The Pacific Clipper was on the last leg of a four-day flight from San Francisco to New Zealand, when the attack happened, thus halting the scheduled flight. The only way to get back to the United States was to turn the plane around and fly west. By doing this, the Pacific Clipper became the first non-scheduled commercial flight around the world, and since they had no radio contact, used an atlas and a compass for navigation.
