It is the outside part of the leather. The part of the hide under the hair. Split leather (suede) is the underneath layer when the split the hide into two or three parts.. depending on how thick the hide is. So top grain has the smooth side on one side.. The other side is like suede. Of course topgrain has the original look and grain of the leather. It is the premium part of the hide. Our smaller 15 year old teen boy can also wear the xl as well as our 17 year old girl.. So the sizing is a small adult/women size
