When the key is removed, the drive is unauthenticated and all data within the drive are no longer decrypted. The advantage of hardware encryption over software encryption is that you don't have to remember long complicated PIN/password and worry about Trojans/viruses or software upgrades; making it the easiest-to-use solution for secure storage. The unit is bundled with keys and registration is required for key duplication.
