Question:Do most reviewers of this board use some sort of backboard and if not do the soft top miss shot ruin the wall?

Answer:Depends who's playing, if you're considering it you should probably have one. They can leave holes in the wall. I don't have one behind mine, but I throw a lot of darts.. If kids were playing on it I'd definately have one
