The kamancheh is considered an ancient precursor to the Western violin, likely influenced by it and the medieval lyre.

This instrument has traveled widely, particularly in Central Asia in regions like Armenia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan—the latter developed its own variant, the Azerbaijani kamancheh. The kamancheh differs in resonator shape, length, and wood type. Traditionally, its strings were silk, but now often use metal, and it’s played with a bow strung with horsehair or thin plastic threads.

Kamancheh tuning varies: Persian kamancheh typically tunes G – C – G – C (low to high), while Azerbaijani kamancheh tunes C – G – C – G. Sometimes, it’s tuned in fourths (G – D – A – E) depending on the musical style.
